Events week 4 – 13th May
Dear Members,
Please read the attached document which details the bowling events involving our Club during the week beginning Monday 13 May.
Our Ladies have their first Heather League match against Carrickknowe B.C. with one rink at home and one away on Monday at 2.00pm. Good luck, ladies.
Our Senior Gents begin their Bowls Scotland campaigns also on Monday afternoon. One of our Singles representatives (David Sutherland) has a match against Parkside B.C. at Balerno.
Our Fours ‘A’ (Ricky Stevens, Jim Connor, Tom Mitchell and Bernie Callaghan) take on Bainfield B.C. at Carrickknowe while the Fours ‘B’ (Jim MacKay, Les Brown, Bill Cumming and Scott Jackson) will compete against Slateford B.C. at Balerno. These games start at 2.00pm. All the best, guys. In addition, we are hosting a Singles and 2 Fours in this competition on the green on Monday afternoon.
Then, on Tuesday 14 May, some of our Gents’ representatives kick off their Bowls Scotland journeys with Stuart Campbell taking on Beechwood B.C. in the Singles at Coltbridge. Our Pairs ‘A’ (John P Simpson and Scott Jackson) will have a match against Parkside B.C. at Liberton while the Pairs ‘B’ (Bob Page and David McNiven) compete against Bainfield B.C. at Lutton Place. All of these games start at 6.45pm. Stick in, guys.
On Thursday 16 May, our remaining representatives in the Gents’ EBA ‘Spring Knockout’ competitions, Dougie Wilson and Bernie Callaghan, will take on Brunstane B.C. in the Australian Pairs at 6.45pm at Carrickknowe. All the best, guys.
Also, on Thursday, our Mixed Rink (Laura MacKay, Ronnie McLaren, Tom Mitchell and David Sutherland) have a game in their EBA competition against Whitehouse & Grange B.C. at Leith at 6.45pm. Good luck, guys and gals.
Our Ladies’ Pairs (Jean Meiklejohn and Chris Bentley) and Triples (Pat Reid, Laura MacKay and Pat Clark) kick off their Bowls Scotland campaigns next weekend. On Saturday 18 May, Jean and Chris have a match against Liberton B.C. at 10.00am at Braid and, if successful, they will have another game at Braid on Sunday at 10.00am. The Triples will take on Whitehouse & Grange B.C. at Balerno at 2.00pm on Saturday 18 May and, if successful, will have another match at Balerno on the Sunday at 10.00am. Good luck, ladies.
On Sunday 19 May, hopefully our Bowls Scotland Mixed Pairs teams will still be involved in this competition. Pat Reid and David McGuire will have a match at Carrickknowe while Jane Mitchell and Willie Stoddart will play at Whitehouse and Grange. Both of these matches start at 6.00pm. All the best, guys and gals.
Please note that the closing date for entry into this season’s Pairs (Blyth, Club and Birnie), Davis Triples and Walker Fours competitions is Monday 13 May. So, there is still time to add your names to the lists on the Mixed and Gents’ Noticeboards. We would also encourage those members who have their names on the ‘Help Sheet’ on the Gents’ Noticeboard to approach others on the Sheet to form teams for these competitions.
Finally, the first Gents’ Friendly of the season against Gala Abbotsford B.C. is scheduled for Saturday 18 May at 2.00pm at Gala. There is still time to add your name to the list on the Noticeboard if you wish to play. We are still looking for 2 players. We are sure that everyone involved will have a wonderful afternoon.

Events Week 3 – 6th May

Please read the attached document which details the bowling events involving our Club during the week beginning Monday 6 May.
Our EBA Ladies’ team have their first League match on Monday at Colinton at 6.30pm. All the best, girls.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Ladies kick off their East of Scotland campaign with the Fours (Faye Stevens, Ronnie McLaren, Gladys Christie and Pat Clark) taking on Carrickknowe B.C. at Colinton at 2.00pm. Good luck. ladies.
Then, on Thursday afternoon, the Ladies’ East of Scotland Pairs (Jean Meiklejohn and Chris Bentley) and the Triples (Jane Mitchell, Pat Reid and Joan Mitchell) have matches against Braid B.C. and Colinton B.C. respectively at Sighthill at 2.00pm. All the best, girls.
On Thursday evening, the EBA Set Singles and Aussie Pairs competitions begin with our Gents’ Singles ‘A’ (Iain Norton) taking on Sighthill B.C. at Craigentinny and ‘B’ (Ricky Stevens) against Parkside B.C. at Portobello. The Gents’ Pairs ‘A’ (Joe Blair and Keith Bennett) have a match against Maitland B.C. at Slateford. All of these games start at 6.45pm. Stick in, guys. In addition, we have two ties (a Singles and a Pairs) on our green at the same time.
Our Ladies’ Singles representatives (Joan Mitchell and Faye Stevens) and Fours (Ronnie McLaren, Kath Brown, Gladys Christie and Vicky Page) all kick off their Bowls Scotland campaigns next weekend. On Saturday 11 May, Joan has a match against Bainfield B.C. ‘A’ at 10.00am while Faye takes on Bainfield B.C. ‘B’ at 2.00pm both at Parkside and, if successful, they will have another game at Parkside on Sunday at 10.00am. Our Fours will compete against Mayfield B.C. at 11.00am on Sunday 12 May at Currie. Good luck, ladies.
Also on Sunday 12 May, our Mixed Pairs begin their Bowls Scotland journeys with Pat Reid and David McGuire taking on Coltbridge B.C. at Gorgie Mills and Jane Mitchell and Willie Stoddart up against Colinton B.C. at Currie. Events Week 2 – 29th April

Please read the attached document which details the bowling events involving our Club during the week beginning Monday 29 April.
On Tuesday afternoon, our Senior Gents’ North & West teams have their first League matches on Tuesday afternoon with the ‘A’ team away to Tanfield B.C. ‘B’ and the ‘B’ team at home to Goldenacre B.C. Good luck, guys.
The first Gents’ Edinburgh Bowling Association league matches are scheduled for Wednesday (1 May) evening with the First XVI away to Summerside B.C. while the Second XVI are at home to Summerside B.C. The Third Team have a ‘Free Week’. All the best, guys.
The RMBA League matches kick off on Thursday afternoon. Our ‘A’ team are at home to Mayfield B.C. while the ‘B’ team are away to Liberton B.C. Good luck, guys.
On Sunday (5 May), we have this year’s Try Bowls session. It starts at Noon and is an opportunity for family and friends to come along to the Club and have a wee game of bowls. It is aimed at those who have not played the game before but is open to all. Please invite your chums to have a go – who knows, we may get additional members out of it!!
Finally, a couple of reminders. The lists for entry to the Blyth Pairs, Club Pairs, Birnie Pairs, Davis Triples and Walker Fours are currently on the Notice-boards and need to be completed by Monday 13 May. The first Gents’ Friendly of the season away to Gala Abbotsford B.C. will be held at 2.00pm on Saturday 18 May. The list for players for this match is on the Notice-board in the Clubhouse and we are looking for 4 rinks. Please add your name to the list if you are available.

Events Week 1 – 22nd April

Please read the attached document which details the bowling events involving our Club during the week beginning Monday 22 April.
While it is only the first week of the season, there are a few things happening but the number of events will grow as the season progresses. There will be an e-mail each week with the forthcoming events. We hope that you continue to find it useful. A copy will be posted on the ‘Events Board’ in the Clubhouse and on the website.
Our Ladies have their first Water of Leith League match at home to Bainfield B.C. on Wednesday 24 April at 2.15pm. Good luck, girls.
There will be a ‘practice’ match on Wednesday 24 April at 6.15pm for all players involved in the Gents’ Edinburgh Bowling Association teams. A copy of the Teams selected for this game is attached for information. Please check the Notice-board in the locker-room and, if selected but unavailable to play, let Bernie Callaghan know. Please note that dress for this event will be ‘smart, casual’ – no need for Club dress.
The Gents will have their annual Bowling Day at 2.00pm on Saturday 27 April. There is a list on the Gents’ Notice-board for those wishing to play. Please add your name to this list as this will help with the organisation of both the bowling and the catering. Again please note that dress for this event will be ‘smart, casual’.
Lists for entry to the Birnie Mixed Pairs and the Club Pairs competitions are now on the ‘Mixed’ Notice-board while those for entry to the Blyth Pairs, the Davis Triples and the Walker Fours are on the Gents’ Notice-board. These have to be completed by Monday 13 May.
Finally, there is a list on the Gents’ Noticeboard for members wishing to play in the annual Friendly away to Gala Abbotsford B.C. on Saturday 18 May at 2.00pm. Please add your name if you are able to be involved.

Firstly, congratulations to our Ladies’ Triples (Theresa Blair, Pat Reid and Joan Mitchell) who won the Final of the Water of Leith Championships last Wednesday beating Sighthill B.C. at Colinton. Well done, ladies.
Also, congratulations to the following who won their Finals last week :
1. Angus McGarry and Bernie Callaghan for the Club Pairs
2. Theresa Blair who won the Senior Ladies’ Championship
3. Jean Hildersley, Ronnie McLaren and Theresa Blair who won the Senior Ladies Triples
4. Pat Reid and David McGuire for the Birnie Mixed Pairs
5. Jean Meiklejohn and Theresa Blair who won the Ladies’ Nominated Pairs
Well done, guys and gals.
Stuart Campbell will compete in the EBA Tait Trophy (Champion of Champions) this week. His first game will be against the London Road Foundry B.C. champion on Friday evening at 6.15pm at Seafield. If Stuart wins this match, then he will have potentially two games on Saturday 9 September at 11.00am and 2.00pm at West End. Then, if successful in these games, he will compete in the semi-final and (potentially) the final at Northern B.C. on Sunday 10 September at 11.00am and 2.00pm respectively. All the best, Stuart. Please try to get along to support him if you can.
Please note that the draw for this season’s Murdoch Trophy is now on the ‘Mixed’ Noticeboard. This draw involves the finalists of 8 qualifying competitions over the year. Please check the Noticeboard for the closing dates for each round. The date for the first round matches is Friday 8th September.
Our Ladies have their annual Friendly away to Blackhall B.C. on Tuesday afternoon at 2.00pm. We are sure that everyone involved will have a great time.
Also on Tuesday afternoon, the Senior Gents’ North & West Knockout Finals will be held at Willowbrae at 1.30pm. Our Pairs (Les Brown and Alex Fisher) will take on Dean B.C. Stick in, guys.
There are several Competition Finals scheduled this week.
On Monday afternoon at 2.00pm, a match involving Charlie Sweeney and Tom Mitchell against Bernie Callaghan and David Sutherland will decide the outcome of the Senior Gents’ Nominated Pairs.
Then on Saturday afternoon, we have three Finals viz,
– The Ladies’ Two-Bowl between Jean Meiklejohn and Theresa Blair at 2.00pm
– The Ladies’ Sutherland Quaich involving Val Mather against Gladys Christie also at 2.00pm
– The Gents’ Blyth Pairs with John Donoghue and Scott Jackson taking on Bob Page and Keith Rutherford at 4.00pm .
And on Sunday afternoon at 2.00pm, there are three Finals scheduled viz.
– The President’s between Dougie Wilson and John Greig
– The Vice-President’s involving Ronnie Clark against Iain Norton
– The Senior Gents’ Triples with Tom Wallace, Neil Sutherland and Les Brown in action against David McGuire, Mohindra Dhall and Bernie Callaghan

1. On Wednesday 13 September, the annual Ladies v Senior Gents for the Carruth Trophy is scheduled at 2.00pm. There are lists on both the Ladies’ and Senior Gents’ Noticeboards for those members wanting to play.
2. The annual Senior Gents’ Friendly at home to Carrickknowe B.C. is scheduled for 2.00pm on Friday 15 September. We have a full squad for this match and we are sure everyone involved will have a wonderful afternoon.
3. The annual RugBowl Trophy competition between ourselves and Corstorphine Rugby Club will be held on the green at 2.00pm on Sunday 17 September. Currently, there are only 14 names on the list of participants. Please add your name to the list on the ‘Mixed’ noticeboard if you wish to play.
4. The Ladies have their annual Friendly away to Carrickknowe B.C. on Tuesday 19 September at 2.00pm. There is a list on the Ladies’ Noticeboard for those who wish to play in this match.

Events Week 19 – 28th August

Firstly, huge congratulations to Stuart Campbell who won the Gents’ Championship last Friday evening in a fine match against Andy Lomax. The game was a real credit to both players. Well done, Stuart and hard lines, Andy.
Also, huge congratulations to David Sutherland who beat Brian Henaghen in the Final of the Senior Gents’ Championship on Friday afternoon. Well done, David and hard lines, Brian.
Commiserations to our Ladies’ EWBA Pairs (Jean Meiklejohn and Chris Bentley) who unfortunately lost the Final of their competition against Braid B.C. last Friday afternoon at Wardie. Hard lines, girls. But a great achievement in getting there.
We have four Finals scheduled for this week :
1. The Club Pairs with Roy Beavis and Dougie Wilson taking on Angus McGarry and Bernie Callaghan on Wednesday at 2.00pm
2. The Senior Ladies’ Championship between Joan Mitchell and Theresa Blair on Thursday at 11.00am
3. The Birnie Mixed Pairs with Pat Reid and David McGuire in action against Jane Mitchell and Willie Stoddart on Sunday at 10.00am
4. The Ladies’ Nominated Pairs involving Jean Meiklejohn and Theresa Blair against Pat Clark and Evelyn Lowe also on Sunday at 10.00am

We have the honour of hosting the New Zealand Deaf Bowls team on two days this week. They will have two practice sessions on the green at 11.00am and 2.00pm on Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st. These (two-rink) sessions are in preparation for the World Deaf Bowls Championships being held at Colinton B.C. the following week. Please make these bowlers feel very welcome if you are at the Club on these occasions.
The annual Ladies’ Page Two-Bowl Pairs competition will be held on the green at 1.30pm on Monday 28 August. We are sure that everyone involved will have a wonderful afternoon.
The Ladies’ Water of Leith Championship Finals will be held at Colinton B.C. on Wednesday 30 August at 2.00pm. Our Triples (Theresa Blair, Pat Reid and Joan Mitchell) will take on Sighthill B.C. All the best, ladies.
The Senior Ladies’ Triples will be held on Saturday 2 September starting at 1.30pm. The draw for this competition will be on the Senior Ladies’ Noticeboard later this week.
Finally, a wee heads-up for some upcoming events :
1. Two sessions on the green (2.00pm and 4.00pm) have been allocated to Finals on the weekend of 9 and 10 September. If you are involved in Finals this season and can play on these dates/times, please add your match(es) into the Tie Book.
2. On Wednesday 13 September, the annual Ladies v Senior Gents for the Carruth Trophy is scheduled at 2.00pm. There are lists on both the Ladies’ and Senior Gents’ Noticeboards for those members wanting to play.

Events Week 18 – 21st August

Please read the attached document which details the bowling events involving our Club during the week beginning Monday 21 August.
Firstly, huge congratulations to our Ladies’ Triples (Jean Meiklejohn, Pat Reid and Theresa Blair) who won the Final of the EBA Knockouts today at Whitehouse & Grange beating Tanfield B.C. in a very good match. Well done, girls – a magnificent achievement.
The Gents’ Championship Final between Andy Lomax and Stuart Campbell will be held on Friday 25 August at 6.30pm. Please try to get along to the Club to support the guys in this very important match. All the best to both Andy and Stuart.
Our Ladies continue their campaigns in the EWBA Championship games on Monday afternoon at 2.00pm. The Singles (Theresa Blair) will take on London Road Foundry B.C. while our Pairs (Jean Meiklejohn and Chris Bentley) will play Sighthill B.C. Both of these matches are at Braid. If they are successful in these games, then Theresa will have another match at Sighthill and the Pairs will play at Carrickknowe in the semi-finals on Wednesday afternoon at 1.30pm. Then, if they win on Wednesday, they will compete in the Finals at Wardie on Friday afternoon at 1.30 pm. Good luck, ladies.
On Saturday 26 August, we are scheduled to host the annual Sanderson Invitation Triples competition (start times to be announced). Currently, we only have 8 entries on the list. This is not enough to run the competition. We are looking for a minimum of 12 triples. Please add your names to the list before Monday evening when we will make a decision as to the viability of holding it this season.
Then, on Sunday 27 August, we have the annual Ladies v Gents match at 2.00pm. This is always a very competitive and enjoyable afternoon.
Finally, a wee heads-up for some upcoming events :
1. The annual Ladies’ Page Two-Bowl Pairs will be held on Monday 28 August starting at 1.30pm. There is still a little time to add your names to the list on the Ladies’ Noticeboard if you wish to participate in this competition.
2. The Senior Ladies’ Triples competition is scheduled on Saturday 2 September (start time to be advised).
3. The annual Ladies’ Friendly away to Blackhall B.C. will be held on Tuesday 5 September at 2.00pm. There is a list on the Ladies’ Noticeboard for those who wish to be involved in this match.
4. On Wednesday 13 September, the annual Ladies v Senior Gents for the Carruth Trophy is scheduled at 2.00pm. There are lists on both the Ladies’ and Senior Gents’ Noticeboards for those members wanting to play.

Firstly, congratulations to our Gents’ Third Team who won Division 1 of their EBA League for the second year in succession. Well done, guys.
Our Ladies begin their campaigns in the EWBA Championship games on Monday afternoon at 2.00pm. The Pairs (Jean Meiklejohn and Chris Bentley) will take on Dudley B.C. at Seafield and the Triples (Beryl Sutherland, Gladys Christie and Joan Mitchell) are in action against Carrickknowe B.C. at Liberton. Then, on Wednesday afternoon, our Singles representative (Theresa Blair) will play against Whitehouse & Grange B.C. at Juniper Green and our Fours (Val Mather, Jane Mitchell, Pat Clark and Evelyn Lowe) will take on Seafield B.C. at Whitehouse & Grange. If our Pairs and Triples are successful on Monday afternoon, then they will be in action at Leith and Balerno respectively on Wednesday afternoon at 2.00pm. Good luck, ladies.
In addition, we are hosting four ties (2 Singles and 2 Triples) in these EWBA Championships on Monday afternoon.
Our Gents have their annual Friendly at home to Blackhall B.C. on Wednesday at 6.15pm. We are sure everyone involved will have a great evening.

If the Ladies are successful on Thursday evening, then they will play in the Finals at Whitehouse and Grange B.C. on Sunday at 2.00pm. Chis will take on either Goldenacre B.C. or Coltbridge B.C. while the Triples will be in action against either Tanfield B.C. or Summerside B.C.
