Mrs A.A. Stirling (Life Member)
Nan became a member of Corstorphine Bowling Club in 1973 and played until 2001. During that time she reached the final of the Club Championship on 22 occasions winning it a record number of 16 times. She also won the President’s Cup and Two Bowl Trophy on a number of occasions.
Nan was a member of the team that won the Edinburgh Ladies Triples Trophy in 1986 and 1989, the Edinburgh Ladies Pairs Trophy in 1991 and District National Mixed Pairs Championship in 1993. In 1995 Nan reached the final of the Scottish ladies Singles Championship where she was narrowly beaten by her friend and International colleague, Sarah Gourlay.
In 1984 she was selected for the Edinburgh Ladies Bowling Association Team which won the Torrance Purves Trophy which at that time was played in the same format as the men’s Cities and Counties Championship.
Nan was awarded her first International “cap” in 1982 and played for Scotland on 42 occasions between 1985 and 1997, in Home International matches against England, Ireland and Wales with Scotland winning 7 of the 14 series during that time.
In 1991 Nan was selected as part of what is now known as the “elite squad” of 10 players for the 1992 Ladies World Championships, unfortunately missing out on a place in the final 5. However, Nan did take part in those games. Botswana asked Scotland if they could provide a Team Manager for their Team and Nan was appointed to that position.
Nan also represented Scotland in ten series of Indoor Internationals.
Nan was President of the Ladies Section in their Silver Jubilee of 1986 and in the year 2000 was made a Life Member of the Club – the only lady to be so honoured.
